Wisdom • James 3:17

I’ve been thinking about wisdom a lot lately. There are some radical verses about it in Scripture.

Wisdom is "crying out in the street" to us (Proverbs 1:20). It says, "happy is the man who finds wisdom" (Proverbs 3:13). Wisdom is the "principal," or most important thing (Proverbs 4:7).

Here is the one that always stops me in my tracks: “For wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her” (Proverbs 8:11). In other verses, it says that wisdom is more valuable than gold or silver. Clearly the idea is that there is no material possession that is as valuable as wisdom, and I think that is saying a lot!

That last phrase says that nothing that I can desire can compare with wisdom. In other words, I should desire wisdom more that anything. I can say that's not the case most of the time, so that’s step one: actually making God’s wisdom a priority.

If you want to know what godly wisdom looks like in day to day life, check out James chapter three.

"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere." James 3:17
